Warwick societies with the BOOK factor
[dropcap]C[/dropcap]alling all book lovers! Whether you’re a new or returning student at the University of Warwick, societies are a great way to make friends, develop skills so your CV stands out from the pile and, most importantly, have fun. Reading of course is a solitary pursuit, but join any one of these societies to turn your love of books into a social activity! Whether you’re into Pride and Prejudice or Peter Parker, we have the society for you.
Boar Books
You’ve obviously already managed to locate our website, but you should do one better and write for us!
Here at the Books section of The Boar, we deal with all things wordy. Whether it’s super-serious, worthy literature or the latest best-seller, poetry, short stories, non-fiction or graphic novels, if you’re reading it, we want to know about it! As well as reviews, we also publish features, interviews with authors and spotlights on books-related events.
There are so many perks to being a Books writer – you get to express your opinions (and have fun doing it), meet fun people and have an excuse to do some non-course related reading. Being a writer is a flexible and it’s easy to work around your other commitments. It also looks great on your CV, because it shows you’re self-motivating, hard-working and with a high standard of written communication. These skills are useful for all jobs, but are particularly helpful if you’re considering a career in publishing, journalism or marketing.
You don’t need to have any previous experience and you definitely don’t need to be an English Literature student.

Warwick Literature Society
Warwick Lit.Soc is the home of book-lovers at Warwick University. Regardless of what degree you’re taking, we welcome all readers – so whether you’re an Engineer, a Physicist or an English literature student, if you love books, you’ll be right at home in our society!
We put on a variety of events for our members, including quizzes in tea shops, theatre trips, circling, book sales, balls, tours, and bar crawls. We top this off with a ‘Lit.Week’ in term two, crammed full of daily events such as author talks, parties and a careers café. We also love collaborating with other societies to broaden our members’ experiences – this year our first joint trip will be with the Harry Potter society to go the Warner Brothers Studio Tour!
We realise that you’re here at Warwick to work as well as play, so we also have our weekly Academic Aid sessions. They will help you tweak and perfect your essay writing, referencing and editing skills – and hopefully make the whole essay-crafting process just a little more bearable. If you’re also looking to get even more reading in your schedule, our friendly book club meets regularly to read and discuss a wide variety of books throughout the year.
We consider ourselves to be one of the friendliest and most welcoming societies on campus and love to meet new people – so if you love novels, plays, poetry or anything in between, then Lit.Soc will definitely be your cup of tea.

Warwick Jane Austen Society
Calling all Janeites!
It is a truth universally acknowledged that Warwick Jane Austen is the most exciting thing since the Netherfield Ball. We have one aim: to bring together all who share a love of Austen’s literature, film adaptations, cups of tea, and the regency period. From the reader who just discovered lace bonnets to the proficient expert in ballroom etiquette, we welcome all types of Austenite.
We may have been operating as unofficial last year, however that didn’t stop us from taking a trip to the incredible Stoneleigh Abbey, situated near Campus, where we took part in the renowned Jane Austen Tour. This year, we aim to hold more exciting trips! We also hold a number of informal and frequent gatherings, such as tea parties, film sessions, Curiositea catch-ups and nights out.
Warwick Jane Austen prides itself on being more than just a society, but also a close community of people who support each other through university and beyond. If you ever need a chat, we’re here for you.
If you have a love of nineteenth-century literature, or simply find Colin Firth charming, make sure you pop by. Come to one of our socials and meet your fellow Austenites – you are always welcome!

Warwick Writing Society
Warwick Writing Society is the place for anyone with as much interest in writing books as in reading them. The only society dedicated to creative writing, WriSoc are here to provide a relaxed space for writers of all levels.
The core activity of WriSoc happens in our twice-weekly Writing Workshops, which last for two hours and focus on a particular style, theme, or genre. These Workshops feature writing games, challenges, the opportunity to share work, and an arena for debate. Alongside these, we run casual feedback sessions once a week, where members have the chance to compare projects and to discuss their work in-depth. We also hold regular socials, including outings to the Dirty Duck, film nights, and the infamous ‘Writer All-Nighter’ – a dusk-til-dawn writing relay race in which two teams frantically compete to produce the weirdest and wildest collaborative piece.
We are always keen to see our members publish work which they are proud of. With this in mind, we edit and produce a bi-weekly publication named DODO, which features a range of creative writing pieces from anyone who is interested in submitting.
Ultimately, WriSoc offers a friendly environment in which to meet other people who share your passions, and where you have the freedom to exercise your writing muscles with no pressure or expectation. It doesn’t matter to us if you’re as new to writing as a baby to the world, or if you’ve already created a seventeen-part saga: we want to hear from you, and we want to hear your writing!

Warwick Comic Book Society
Ever since the superhero movie boom in the early noughties, the popularity of comic books has resurged dramatically. Nowadays, it’s hard to walk from one side of campus to the other without seeing someone displaying a form of Marvel or DC merchandise. The relevance of comics to today’s pop culture doesn’t show signs of ceasing. Warwick Comic Book Society is the perfect place for newcomers and experts alike to read, enjoy and learn about comic book culture.
Our typical activities are watching as many new releases in the cinema as humanly possible, the end-of-term movie all-nighters, and generally just hanging around talking about comic books, occasionally in the pub! This year, we will be arranging trips to comic conventions, plus inter-society socials. Members of the society have the benefit of access to any title from our huge, constantly expanding library, comprised of almost 200 comics, compilations and graphic novels. The library is the perfect key for discovering titles, both for the newbie and the comic book pro.
Highly recommend to anyone who loves comics, newcomers and diehard fans alike should join as soon as possible!
