Warwick awards for teaching excellence announced

The winners of the Warwick Awards for Teaching Excellence (WATE) for 2013-14 have been announced. The award recognises excellence in teaching and support for learning at Warwick.

This year’s awards received a record of over 70 nominations from staff, students and alumni.

The winners were Andrew Dove (Chemistry), Jack Elliott (History), Emma King (Learning and Development Centre), Margaret Low (Warwick Manufacturing Group) and Leanne Williams (Life Sciences).

Andrew Dove, an awardee and professor of Chemistry, said: “I have always believed that teaching and research should be equally respected and have focused on delivering high quality in both aspects.

“While the research side of the job is often more widely recognised it is great to have awards in the University that recognise excellence in teaching.”

He added: “I was truly surprised when I heard that my nomination had been supported by several students. To be nominated and then to be named as an awardee has been very special for me.”

Pro Vice-Chancellor Christina Hughes, chair of the WATE judging panel, said: “I have been astounded by the response to the WATE awards this year, which recognises the excellent teaching here at Warwick.

“It is has been pleasing to know that staff and students have taken the time to tell us about their experiences of teaching and to hear just how innovative and inspiring our academics or support staff have been.”

Winners each receive £5,000 to further enhance their practice and will receive their awards at the Summer Degree Congregation held later this year.
