Happy workers make more productive workers
Happiness makes people more productive at work, according to research led by two Warwick economists.
A number of tests carried out found that happiness made people around 12 percent more productive.
During experiments participants either watched a comedy film clip or were treated to free chocolate, drinks and fruit.
Others were questioned about recent family tragedies to assess whether lower levels of happiness were then resulted in lower levels of productivity.
Professor Andrew Oswald, Dr Eugenio Proto and and Dr Daniel Sgroi led the research.
Dr Sgroi said: “The driving force seems to be that happier workers use the time they have more effectively, increasing the pace at which they can work without sacrificing quality.”
Professor Oswald added: “Companies like Google have invested more in employee support and employee satisfaction has risen as a result. For Google, it rose by 37 percent, they know what they are talking about. Under scientifically controlled conditions, making workers happier really pays off.”
As the experts say then, it is best if students also treat themselves while revising or essay writing – it may pay off in their results.
