The University of Warwick Ladies Hockey Club volunteers at The Dogs Trust Centre in Kenilworth.
On Friday 7th March 2014, the University of Warwick Ladies Hockey Club (UWLHC) spent the day at The Dogs Trust Centre in Kenilworth.
The Dogs Trust is a charity which aims primarily to provide homes for abused and abandoned dogs to prevent their being euthanised.
Besides caring for approximately 16,000 dogs each year, it subsidises neutering campaigns, gives preventative veterinary care to dogs whose owners are homeless, advises government on all matters pertaining to dog ownership, and assists overseas animal welfare charities by training their staff in the best practices.
The Centre in Kenilworth is one of the largest of its kind in the UK, homing around 200 dogs at any time.
With such a large number of dogs to care for, extra help is always appreciated, so the volunteers from the UWLHC were welcomed.
Whilst there, the girls painted fences in the outside runs where the dogs can exercise freely and securely.
The UWLHC have participated in other community projects, but, according to Jade Vidler, UWLHC Charities and Communities Secretary, this was one of their biggest.
“The Dogs Trust were great and we all really enjoyed volunteering with them for the day,” she said, adding that this was not only due to the “fun and rewarding activity”, but also “the cheery, welcoming and positive attitude of all the staff at the Dogs Trust”.
Annabel Plumeridge, who also volunteered on the day, echoed Jade’s sentiments, saying: “we had so much fun today, and it was lovely to get out in the community – and to see so many cute dogs, of course!”
