A flurry of abuse hits Twitter
Following the nail-biting, glorious finish to the first Varsity fixture, many took to Twitter to not only celebrate, but also cast criticism.
SU President Ben Sundell was among many to take to Twitter to rejoice the Panthers’ victory by posting, “OMG YESSSSS we won! #varsity.”
Sundell wasn’t the only shocked onlooker: Warwick Riding captain Emily Wright added “Ice Hockey victory! And that is why we Warwick #YesItsAVerbNow.”
Yet, unsurprisingly, not everyone was so pleased. When men’s cricket tweeted their congratulations promising that they too would ‘smash’ Coventry in their contest, they were met with a spiteful response from their opposition. @Covunicc reminded the Warwick boys of their victory in a recent BUCS match.
Then, Varsity mascot and infamous tweeter Warwick Bear got involved in the cat fight to jog the Coventry team’s memory of their 2013 Varsity loss. This was met with an accusation of cheating, whereby the Warwick cricket squad were labelled ‘scum’.
A series of sad face memes and league tables ensued with the Coventry team tweeting a photo of the BUCS league table with both their first and second teams lying above Warwick’s first.
In response, Rob Povey, who runs the @UoWMCC account, and other exec members also posted a table, this time The Complete University Guide’s grid that places Warwick in eighth and Coventry fifty positions lower, accomponied by the hashtag ‘some form’. Warwick Bear added ‘keep Bangor at bay.’
The spat concluded with the Coventry cricket team assuring that they would do their talking on the pitch.
Meanwhile, a photo also surfaced on the Bear’s account, separate to the argument discussed, of Coventry fans failing to spell their own name on their bodies. Enjoy.
