Worrying winter woes

Do you people even get sad in winter? Seeing as I’m from the desert where winter is basically a fictional concept and the only way Santa can travel is via camel, winter blues isn’t something we’re particularly bothered about. Yet depression hit for the first time this winter in the UK when I was forced to be away from home. With family thousands of miles away, and not a single sand dune in sight, things were getting a bit lonely. So how do we solve this despicable problem of the winter blues? Well there’s only one way to find out…

My biggest blues buster has got to be my new found family here at Warwick. True, they’re the most insane people I’ve ever met, but they’re like me so things work out. When you’re away from home you definitely need to find someone, or a group of someones who are ready to be your rock should the time ever come when you need someone to talk to, someone to laugh with, and most importantly someone to feed you. These are the people who for the next three or four years at Warwick are going to make it seem like your home away from home. Spend your time this winter catching up with the friends you’ve made in your first term. Who knows, there may be some amazing people out there that you’ve yet to meet.

Winter brings with it boredom, so we need to make sure we fight back. Try something new each day to keep your spirit alive. Be it something as simple as the special at the Bread Oven, or as wild and crazy as 4:00am Tesco runs (self check-out is evil), the memories you make now are sure to keep you going for the days to come. I personally recommend pushing yourself to the limit and giving this year your all. Join a club or society if you haven’t already and get involved in what they’re up to. Here at Warwick we’ve got some incredible activities going on every single day which are bound to keep you busy and well entertained.

Finally on the list of giving winter blues the cold shoulder is the inevitable back-to-uni bash. Nothing gets that adrenaline going like a buzzing party filled to the brim with your favourite people. So hit the town, go wild and celebrate the fact that right at this very moment you’re living life to the fullest. After all, we only get one college experience so now’s the time to make the most of it.
