Christie Almighty!
“Americans are a forgiving people” The Chairman of the Republican National Committee, Reince Priebus, felt it necessary to remind his fellow countryman of the virtue of forgiveness, in light of the recent revelations relating to ‘Bridgegate’. Such a call for clemency is suitably ironic when you consider that Chris Christie – the man many Republicans believe will heroically lead them into the White House come 2016 – is embroiled in this scandal precisely because of his inability to bury the hatchet.
Now, ‘gates’ come and go but, like Christie himself, this one is pretty large
For those of you outside the loop – apparently, Christie knows exactly how you feel – the Bridgegate scandal is the latest ‘gate’ to emerge in the often Machiavellian game of American politics. Now, ‘gates’ come and go but, like Christie himself, this one is pretty large. Most likely due to a grudge against Fort Lee’s Democrat mayor who refused to support his re-election bid, Christie’s senior aides de- cided to close lanes on the nearby George Washington Bridge, leading to an unfortunate patient’s death.
The question that the Attorney General wants answering is, did Christie know about it? The Governor’s conference to deny in- volvement does seem to like a more emphatic way of saying ‘I am not a crook’; and we all know how well that turned out for Nixon. On top of this, another investigation into Christie’s possible misappropriation of Hurricane Katrina relief funds is currently gathering momentum. Marco Rubio certainly sees the opportunity for self-advancement that Christie’s disaster presents, playing Pilate by refusing to come out either for or against the man in danger of political crucifix- ion. The man some saw as destined to be the saviour of the Republican Party seems to have suddenly lost his halo.
