2014 Boar Resolutions
We at the Boar, are no strangers to the yearly ritual that sweeps the nation and lasts just as long as a bottle of vodka on a Friday night. Whether or not a New Year’s Resolution lasts for the entire year or just the first few weeks of January, we’ve decided to join in with the fun and make our own attempts at self-improvement:
George Ryan, Editor –
I want to complete my degree, preferably out of my overdraft. Also drink less, study more, get fit et cetera.
Maya Fowell, Deputy Editor (Communications) –
In 2013, I set myself a pretty radical resolution: to wear more red lipstick. It wasn’t always easy but I had taken the sacred vow of change along with the rest of the world, and I wasn’t going to be the girl that let the rest of the universe down!
17 different shades of red later, my preference between matte, gloss, shine, and crème truly grasped, I can proudly say with lips to rival Snow White’s, I accomplished my goal.
This year, my resolution is to have more 30-second dance parties.
Helena Moretti, Deputy Editor (Online) –
This year, I want to write something positive about every day, and keep it in a jar until 2015. I kept it up until July this year, so I’d like to see it through for a whole year!
Sian Elvin, News Editor –
Resolution: find myself some more exotic and interesting things to cook for myself at uni (I got some herbs and spices for Christmas so I’m doing well already). I’m just so bored of jacket potatoes and pasta!
Joanna Harwood, Lifestyle Deputy Editor –
I’m not in the habit of making New Year’s resolutions. A lot can happen in the space of a year and I prefer to adapt to life’s little dramas as and when they come at me
Benjamin Shaw, Money Editor –
Every year I do the same thing, I make big, bold resolutions, and never stick them. This year, I’m trying to make them a little more manageable:
Once a month I want to do something I’ve never done before. Think Salsa dancing or improvised musicals – Something that’ll make me uncomfortable!
Keep up with Horse Racing. I was a huge follower before Uni, but just haven’t kept up to date since getting back. Time to change that!
Luke Brown, Sport Deputy Editor –
To stop engaging in acts of wanton vandalism when drunk. Rootes Accommodation, we’ve had our differences, but it’s time to put them aside. I apologise.
Daniel Cope, Comment Deputy Editor –
I suppose I should have a New Year’s Resolution, helps keep you motivated after all! But I’m bound to forget it among the million other things term two demands I resolve first. Essay deadlines I’m looking at you.
Isaac Leigh, Sports Editor –
To travel as much as possible (be it in England or abroad), to be happy whatever happens and to work on a cure for my crippling case of FOMO.
Julia Dorrington, Arts Deputy Editor –
Get myself into a routine for doing more exercise. I make this resolution every term but I should really do it. Going to get my housemates to bully me! And also to make sure I don’t waste any opportunities. I feel this is more vital now than ever that I am in my final year. I’m going to apply for the jobs that I want and get involved in the things that will help me get them.
Poppy Rosenberg, Books Editor –
Warning: my resolution will resemble something out of a miss world pageant. But seriously, i want 2014 to be the year where I am more positive about everything, say yes to (almost) everything, and do more adventurous things that will leave me waking up with a huge smile on my face and a good story to tell!
Chiara Milford, TV Deputy Editor –
My new years resolution is as follows: I hereby resolve to say yes to everything I am offered. This idiot homage to #YOLO will undoubtedly lead to innumerable illegal and possibly life threatening situations, but what’s life if a little dangerous eh?
Derin Odeuyungbo, Deputy News Editor –
To stop falling asleep in lectures
Lillian Hingley, Deputy Books Editor –
2014 is the year I want to finally do some academic research related to but separate from my degree work. Although it’s early days (and second year success permitting), I’m also excited/absolutely terrified about the prospect of completing MA applications at the start of my third year. Will I succeed or will this just be a dream? Watch this space.
Michael Perry, Music Editor –
To stop worrying so much about what other people think of me and start focusing on what I’m actually accomplishing for myself.
Ann Yip, Deputy News Editor –
In 2014, I hope to be able to balance and manage my degree and journalistic writing better with my other interests like social life and working out. It is hard because it’s not about which is more important, it’s about balancing career ‘development’ with personal welfare.
Bethan Riddel, Features Deputy Editor –
To learn to cook- baked beans just aren’t doing it for me anymore!
Raghav Bali, Film Editor –
Forget past failure. Expect future failure. Do less Internet. Do more degree. Excel at Microsoft Excel. Acquire enriching internship. Read more literature. Write more good.
Cayo Costa Sobral, Science & Tech Deputy Editor –
To say “yes” to new things more often
Rebekah Ellerby, Arts Editor –
Heading into 2014, I am resolving to follow Jesus’ example of love and kindness more faithfully. I also resolve to make even more use of the fantastic arts venues we have near Warwick in my final two terms, celebrate my 21st in style, not miss a single episode of Game of Thrones, and do something adventurous over the summer. And perhaps get some sort of artsy employment.
Josh Murray, TV Editor –
I have been meaning to watch Game of Thrones for over a year now, but I keep putting it off for various insignificant reasons (my degree, doing a job etc). As your laughably under-qualified TV editor, I am aiming to be all caught up for the time that Sky Atlantic shows the upcoming fourth series, if only to find out what all the fuss is about and save myself the hassle of frantically avoiding spoilers!
More seriously, I have made a resolution to give blood regularly. Recently, one of my closest friends from home donated blood and bone marrow and helped a seriously ill person he had never met on the other side of the country. It made me realise how such a simple act as giving blood can genuinely change people’s lives for the better, and I aim to start donating at regular intervals in 2014.
Bethan McGrath, Lifestyle Deputy Editor –
My resolution for 2014 is to stop inhaling the contents of my fridge after a night out… and wondering where all my food has gone the next morning.
