Warwick Relays prove huge success

Saturday 2 November saw 145 athletes take to the muddy fields around Cryfield Pavilion to battle it out through the cold and rain for the glory of taking home a prestigious Warwick Relays medal.

The cash prizes, available to the fastest male and female runners, were this year awarded to Nottingham University Athletics & Cross-country Club (NUAXC) President Jonny Simpkins, who completed the 3.3km in a rapid 10m 28s, and to Warwick’s very own Charlotte Taylor, who ran the course in an impressive 11m 02s.

A team from Kenilworth Harriers won the men’s race, with four members of WUAXC alumni (Alex Hougton, Nick Houghton, Chris Melbourne, & Andrew Sheridan) coming in third, just pipped to second place by a group of men from NUAXC.

First place in the Women’s race went to a team of Warwick Triathlon girls – Charlotte Taylor, Natacha Lee, and Rhian Male – who outstripped the runners up, a Nottingham team, by over two minutes. Alexandra McClelland, Bernard Sexton, James Waterman and Milly English took home bronze medals in the mixed race, and the best non-performing athletics team were a group from Warwick Triathlon.

Meanwhile, gold medals in the Ladies’ jogging division went to Joanne Sarginson, Lizzie Gill and Sophia Eckl from WUAXC.

There was also a cake sale in aid of the Right to Play charity, with an impressive £122.45 raised. The event was sponsored by Altoria and Warwick Sport.
