Land near Uni considered for new stadium
Land near the University of Warwick is being considered by Coventry City Football Club for a new stadium.
Several sources have claimed that the club is interested in land on the Warwickshire side of Campus for a new stadium. The precise location of the considered site, however, remains unknown.
Coventry City boss Tim Fisher told the Coventry Telegraph that they were considering three sites for the new stadium.
Mr. Fisher did not confirm nor deny claims of the club’s consideration of land near the University.
He said that the club was bound by commercial confidentiality not to reveal any of the prospective sites to avoid prices being pushed up.
A spokesperson for Warwick University, however, said that the University has had no discussions of any sort about the creation of a stadium on its land.
Mr. Fisher said: “We’ve had no talks with Warwick University about a stadium nearby, but everybody can see the sense of linking sport and education.”
It is suggested that the club may be interested in developing an ‘education partnership’ with links to university sports science courses and related fields.
The club’s academy already uses the University’s facilities.
Presently, it is understood that the club plans to use its new stadium as an ‘academy and sports hub’.
It is also believed that the new stadium will bring inward investment, job creation and community benefits for its area.
Additionally, the club has been reported to be considering the Brandon speedway stadium site for its new stadium. In spite of this, there have been claims that there were hold-ups in Coventry City’s provisional deal to buy the Brandon site.
However, Mr. Fisher said that delays on the site had been “complicated by the fact it’s August and people are on holiday.”
Previously, after a row between Coventry City FC and the owners of Coventry’s Ricoh Arena stadium over ‘unreasonable’ rents, the club had relocated to Sixfields Stadium in Northampton.
The club is currently looking to build a new stadium to return to the Coventry area within five years.
Meanwhile, Mr. Fisher said that the club had not dismissed the possibility of a return to Ricoh Arena, but hinted that it could only be after renewed discussions about stadium ownership.
