Warwick Lacrosse attempts to set world record
Warwick Lacrosse players took to the Tarkett Sommer pitch on Saturday 27 April in an attempt to set the Guinness World Record for the longest mixed gender lacrosse game.
36 of the club’s players, in two teams of 18, played for ten hours from nine in the morning until seven in the evening, ten times the usual hour-long game time.
Rebecca Stewart, charity secretary of Warwick Lacrosse and fourth-year History undergraduate, commented: “Every year, we normally do a triathlon or something as our big money raising venture but I think this year we all wanted a bit more of a challenge.
“The boys were keener than the girls. We have 18 of each and we had just enough girls interested but the boys had to be selected on commitment to the club as there were too many sign ups!
“We’re a comparatively new club on campus and lacrosse is a relatively unheard of sport so not only will this event raise loads for charity, it will hopefully raise the profile of our club and our sport in the local area.”
The club’s world record attempt came with their efforts to raise money for charity. It has raised over £2,000 and hopes to do as well as last year when they won the prize for best charitable sports club at the University.
Warwick Lacrosse supports charity organisation MIND, which offers support for people suffering from mental health problems, and Gap Africa, which aims to provide poverty relief and improved education for children living in rural Kenya.
Ms. Stewart added: “Gap Africa was my [nominated charity] as I went out to Kenya at the end of first year with Gap Africa, so it has made my job as charity [secretary] very personal to me.”
