Judo world champion visits Warwick
**Warwick University Judo Club recently received a coaching session from double
Olympic Silver medalist and 1981 world champion Neil Adams.**
Adams took over as guest coach and gave 42 members of the Judo team expert tips in the activity room at Warwick.
He taught them championship-winning moves, and the session ended with sparring, where beginners and experts were all able to fight Neil Adams.
Yanjun Deng, Economics student and black belt at Warwick, said: “Facing more
experienced fighters definitely improves your technique.
“Any mistake and you’re on the floor. Because they are so good you always have to raise your level when you fight them.”
There was also a reunion at Warwick with the British internationals who trained full-
time under Adams in the mid 1990s, including Pan-American champion Niki Adams, British Open champion Lee Burbridge, European champion Matt Ruff and British champion Darren Warner.
Thomas Grandjean, senior coach at the club, said: “We’d like to once again thank Neil Adams for the awe-inspiring session, our awesome coach Dave Nicholls 5th Dan (former GB representative and team captain who trained full-time under Neil Adams) for organising the session, and all the full timers, some of whom came from a long way away.”
Neil Adams 8th Dan is famous for having won the European Championship five times. He was also the first British male to win a world title and the first British male to simultaneously
hold a world title and a European title.
