Dos!

“Dos!” has a rowdy and rock’n’ roll soul, very different from its predecessor “Uno!”.

It starts off misleadingly with “See You Tonight”, a solo by Armstrong with melancholy guitar strumming, before properly kicking off with “Fuck Time”, in pure Foxboro Hot Tubs style rock ‘n’ roll. The wailing guitar solos, interspersed with Armstrong’s sighs of satisfaction and laughs, set the scene for the whole album.

“Lazy Bones”, on the other hand, shows Green Day successfully experimenting with an indie sound. The lyrics “I’m so tired I can’t take it anymore” make a strong impact in the context of Armstrong’s real suffering and substance abuse problem. The album reaches its most chaotic point with “Makeout Party”’s garage rock, wild guitar solos and funky bass line. “Stray Heart”, with its clean and innocent sound, simple and honest love lyrics, and easy rock and roll flow is unlike anything they have ever done – and even one of the best songs of the album. “Ashley” stands out for its rage and menacing mood, inspired from the 80’s punk sound.

The most experimental song of the album is “Nightlife”: yes, Green Day have recorded a rap song. It features female rapper Lady Cobra and consists of a reggae guitar and laid-back beat. Armstrong tries to get in the rapper mindset without overdoing it, the verdict: not as terrible as we expected.

The album concludes with “Amy”, a quiet acoustic ballad, a tribute to Amy Winehouse which creates a peaceful atmosphere to end the album, coming full circle with its opening.
