2013 Warwick Prize for Writing calling for nominations

The 2013 Warwick Prize for Writing is now seeking nominations of any considerable piece of writing in English in any genre, discipline or form.

All staff, students, honorary graduates, honorary professors and emeritus professors from the University of Warwick and Monash University are eligible to nominate creative pieces of writing.

The Warwick Prize for Writing is directed by David Morley, Professor of English at the University. The scheme aims to credit excellence and innovation in contemporary writing.

The 2013 judging panel for the Prize will be headed by Ian Sansom, writer and professor in the Department of English at the University. The other two known judges are Professor Marina Warner and Professor Ed Byrne, Vice-Chancellor of Monash University.

When asked what constitutes ‘good writing’, Ian Sansom, chair of the 2013 judging panel, replied: “We are looking, simply, for works of great intellectual and imaginative range and ambition – in any genre. So the winner could be a work of science, work of fiction, or indeed a work of science-fiction.”

The Prize was established in 2008 and runs every two years. Since 2008, two prizes were awarded. The winner of the first prize in 2009 was Naomi Klein for her work on disaster Capitalism in The Shock Doctrine. The second Prize was awarded to Peter Forbes in 2011 for his piece _Dazzled and Deceived: Mimicry and Camouflage_.

This year, the winner of the 2013 Warwick Prize for Writing will receive £25,000 and an opportunity to take up a short placement at the University of Warwick. The competition also attracts interest from many English language publishers around the world.

To be deemed eligible for the Prize, the literary work must have been published in English from 1st May 2010 onwards, be written by someone outside the University of Warwick or Monash University, be written in English (it can be translated into English) and be written by a living author.

Nominations for the Warwick Prize for Writing can be made online before 31st March 2013:
