Polica are a textbook example of a band whose sound has distracted many a listener from the incisive honesty of their songwriting. It’s far too easy to praise the way Channy Leaneagh’s vocals seem to bend around your ears, or the way the two drummers sync with military precision, or the way synths swell through every moment of silence. It’s easy to forget that this is a breakup album of languishing, space-jammed, hook-laden brilliance – and not just some scientific, sonic experiment.
