Warwick Rowing wins ‘Create a Project’ Competition
The beginning of second term saw the Warwick Rowing club kick-start their new community project in local primary schools.
A group of volunteers from the club would head down to local primary schools armed with six rowing machines and a projector. Each session involved a class from both Year 5 and Year 6, who were all split up into six teams. After a presentation about rowing, some coaching and a practice session, the teams would all race against each other over a distance of 2000m for Year 5 and 3000m for Year 6. The rowing machines would be linked up with the projector so that the virtual boats can be seen on the screen, showing each team who is winning and how far is left to race.
The club was able to provide close to 500 local primary school children with the opportunity to try out rowing in a fun and competitive environment, which encouraged teamwork. The volunteers were overwhelmed with how much enthusiasm the children had and how much every child enjoyed the experience.
The final of the event was held on Thursday 15th March where each school was invited to send a team to represent them against the other schools. It was a huge success and the volunteers were stunned at the amount of support from parents that came along to watch.
Following this final, the volunteers headed to the Warwick Volunteers’ Celebration event where the winner was to be announced for the ‘Create a Project’ competition. Despite strong competition from other sports clubs such as Lacrosse, Warwick Rowing was announced as the winner of the award, taking home the prize of £200.
The project was an overwhelming success for both volunteers and all the children involved and it is hoped that the project can be continued and expanded into the next academic year.
