Warwick goes enviro-mental

Go Green took over campus this week to raise awareness of environmental issues among Warwick students.

Events took place from Monday to Saturday, including daily film screenings, talks and discussions. The initiative was organised by Warwick People & Planet.

Go Green week had an energetic start with a party at the Piazza and bicycle powered smoothies
provided by the Birmingham charity, Sport 4 Life.

Students took full advantage of the return of Dr. Bike on the Piazza on Tuesday, where a team carried out basic repairs for free. Second-year Economics student Povilas Bakas cycles onto campus most days from Tile Hill Coventry, and praised the incentive, “it gets people out of their cars and onto their bikes”.

Talks on textiles, farming, food products and nuclear energy aroused serious debate. Big names that attended as speakers included Tony Roulstone, an academic from Cambridge University, who took part in Tuesday’s nuclear debate. Leader of the Green Party Caroline Lucas was also in attendance and delivered a speech on greener globalisation.

Comparing the week to last year’s Go Green, The Students’ Union Environmental Officer Alexander Wight said: “we wanted to make it more well-known … so we can have better quality debates and the result of better organisation from the Union is evident in the fast paced discussions that took place throughout.”
