Given To The Wild
The Maccabees were the ringleaders of the noughties’ obsession with landfill indie – fringed,
Libertine-loving teenagers writing catchy, but hair-tearingly annoying, songs à la Kaiser Chiefs,
Pigeon Detectives et al. Unexpectedly, Orlando and co. have leapt out of the landfill with their third
effort. The scratchy guitars are gone, as are the mindless hooks. Instead, Orlando sings in a fragile
falsetto over reverb-driven guitar meanderings (see the wistfully powerful Child). The songs are
as catchy as ever (see lead single Pelican), but feel altogether more substantial. New decade, new
direction.
