Block named ‘Sherbourne’
A recent competition to name the new campus accommodation has resulted in Gareth McConnell winning with his suggestion of ‘Sherbourne.’
Due to open in October 2012, Sherbourne will boast a token of local history in its name, which is precisely why McConnell chose it.
“The River Sherbourne has been a central part of the City’s history for over a thousand years.
“It is even feasible that it played a part in the naming of our city – its former alias being ‘Cune’.
“This word might be the reason for the first half of Couaentree – a name by which our settlement was known in a Royal Charter from the middle of the 11th century.”
However, not all are happy with this decision. One campaign called for the new residences to be named after Kevin Gately, a Warwick student who died of injuries sustained during an anti-fascist March against the National Front in London in 1974. Another called for ‘Sunnydale’.
Joshua Bonser, a second-year Politics student, said he thought the name sounded “unimaginative and uninspiring. I think they should have gone with one of the student initiatives.”
