The Inbetweeners comes to Warwick
The four famous dysfunctional friends Will, Simon, Jay and Neil have come to Warwick! Tonight’s episode of The Inbetweeners has our very own University as the choice destination for some
presumably humiliating shenanigans. Just as Warwick Freshers are anticipating their first
experiences of university life, so too are the awkward teenagers from Rudge Park Comprehensive.
Bwark Productions Ltd. who film the popular British sitcom, declined to provide the _Boar_ with any inside information. When asked how the University is represented they refused to comment, but did say they would be happy to respond to any questions or feedback after the episode has aired.
The news that Warwick University features in tonight’s episode has received mixed reactions. One fresher moving into Rootes accommodation over the weekend was excited: “It’s really
cool, hopefully it will promote the Uni as an awesome place to be.” However, third year engineering student Anthony said: “I doubt it will do Warwick’s street cred much good, knowing what the Inbetweeners is like.” Warwick SU President Daniel Stevens, echoed this pessimistic view: “I’ll be honest and say that I actually don’t know much about the Inbetweeners at all! I hope Warwick is portrayed well, but since I’ve been told its a sitcom, I’m not holding my breath.”
Speculation continued on popular internet forum The Student Room. Discussions show some
offence being taken regarding the idea that Warwick is Will’s “absolute last choice of university.” One blogger writes: “I’m assuming Will read one of the league tables upside down”. Another comment suggests that it would be in the best interest of the actors to look favourably upon Warwick University: “If they are mean to Warwick, well God help James Buckley next time he flounces down here for another comedy night!” Buckley, who plays the character of Jay, performed a live DJ set at Lava Ignite in Coventry in January 2010.
It is not only the students who are intrigued by whether good or bad publicity will come of this. The University Press Officer, Peter Dunn, said “We have no idea what it will be like – I will certainly watch … wouldn’t like to say anymore until I have actually seen it!” Unfortunately, the truth is that the episode in question was not really filmed on campus. Therefore, those of us who were looking forward to seeing familiar sights will be disappointed. In fact, the four comedy actors were never anywhere near Warwick. The episode was filmed in London, with no specific mention of where the house they stay in is meant to be. This may leave some Warwick university students downhearted, however it is good news to those who plan to attend the Copper Rooms’ first “Manic Mondays” event tonight and miss the airing of the episode.
