Summer Party lineup announced

The 2010 Summer Party lineup has been announced. It will include the Courteeners, Chicane and Funeral for a Friend.

The outdoor festival, which will be held on the 29th June, will also feature bands such as Bombay Bicycle Club, Chiddy Bang and Girls Can’t Catch. Tickets went on sale last Monday costing £35.

Reactions to the lineup have been mixed. Rachel Wood, a third year Film and Literature student, said, “I do not like the band line up. I am not alone … in thinking that one or two decent bands would have been much better than quite a lot of bands not many have heard of.”

Chris Rye, an Economics finalist, said, “think they seem to have covered all their musical bases but slightly disappointing compared to Basement Jaxx last year which was awesome.” However, he did comment on the event’s good value for money, saying, “this event is only £35 so still worth it.”

The Communications Officer, Isaac Newton Acquah, reacted by saying, “I am pleased with the lineup. It is no Bassment Jaxx but some of the bands we have are single headline acts at other summer parties.”

The party, which is set to be held on the field next to the Maths and Stats building, will also feature fairground attractions, such as dodgems, waltzers and a bouncy castle. Blow up Bacardi bars offering Mojitos will complement a full bar open all day, as well as stalls offering takeaway food.

Wood said, “I never went to the Final Fling, so I don’t know what I’m missing out on, but from what I can see… bouncy castle, funfair rides, bands, food… it’s the same thing, right?”

Acquah said, “although the acts are a big part of the summer party, there is so so much more than just free music, free fairground rides, extra entertainment and more.”

However, controversy has surrounded the fact that third year students will have to pay separately for the two events, the party and the Graduation Ball. This will mean finalists will have to shell out £85 if they want to attend both.

Acquah contested this, saying, “we challenged every cost to give students an amazing experience for as low a cost as possible. This party will be worth every penny.”

The Graduation Ball will be held at the National Motorcycle Museum and feature a 1920s theme, with music authentic to that era.
