Uni appoints new dean of medical school

The University has selected Professor Peter Winstanley as the new Dean of Warwick Medical School.

Winstanley is currently head of the School of Clinical Sciences at the University of Liverpool, working for the university since 1992. He is due to take up the new post in May.

Born and raised in Liverpool, Winstanley graduated from Liverpool Medical School in 1979. He is a leading researcher into drugs for treating malaria.

Professor Winstanley stated: “This is the largest Graduate-Entry medical course in the UK set in one of the country’s best universities. I want to work with the students and staff to define Warwick’s uniqueness, to make the Medical School even more attractive to applicants and to ensure that the reputation of our doctors is enhanced nationally and internationally. Warwick Medical School already has an enviable reputation in postgraduate programmes, and I want to build on that success.”

Speaking to the _Boar_, Winstanley expressed his hopes to be actively involved with the student body and teach around his other duties. He aims to support clinical scientists interested in careers in academic medicine as well as those hoping to work in the public sector. He claimed, “Warwick Medical School is special”, much of which is due to the school’s unique admissions criteria.

Warwick Medical School was established in 2000 and has since gained a widely recognised reputation for teaching and research. Currently Warwick Medical School only accepts students at graduate entry, one of just two medical schools to do so in the UK.

The university’s Vice-Chancellor, Nigel Thrift said: “We are excited to appoint Professor Winstanley as the new Dean of Warwick Medical School. He is a well-respected academic with the enthusiasm and commitment to build on the School’s reputation for world-class education and research.”

Winstanley replaces Professor Yvonne Carter who died of breast cancer in October.
