Society storage nightmare

Lucy Reynolds, Societies Officer, has admitted that the temporary storage space allocated to societies is “not ideal”.

Since the start of the year, some societies have had to keep their equipment in a storage container at Westwood rather than in SU HQ, owing to the ongoing Union rebuild and STA Travel moving upstairs.

However, the move has attracted some criticism because of the fact that there is only one key to the storage unit and it is often left untidy.

Laura Williams, Secretary of Craft Soc, feels let down by the Union. She said, “The storage is a complete mess, not to mention potentially dangerous, with broken furniture and boards piled up against the door. We have had to buy everything again this term. They could have told us our stuff was being moved. I only found out because I asked for the key to cupboard six only to be told by reception that it didn’t exist anymore.”

Laura also told the Boar that she is worried that the storage situation could give her society a reputation for being disorganised. She said, “I am fed up of sending emails to our members, especially freshers, who probably won’t come back now as we keep cancelling exciting workshops such as jewellery making.”

Lucy Reynolds was keen to highlight the fact that the storage solution is only a temporary one and that there is only so much the SU can do to keep the container tidy. She also pointed out that the unit is hired from an external company, which gives out only one key for “security reasons”. She admitted, “It’s not ideal but we’re trying to do the best we can, and we’ll hopefully have more central-campus storage for next term.”
