Students stand in protest during Vice Chancellor’s address
More than a thousand students stood up in protest during Vice Chancellor Nigel Thrift’s undergraduate address on Monday. The protest was part of the Student Union’s campaign for a lecture free induction week.
Freshers are often faced with a heavy workload and cannot fully take part in all the activities on offer. Many students even have exams on their first two days back.
The Students’ Union is in the process of drawing up proposals for a ‘Week 0′ induction week combined with an orientation programme. Union President Stuart Thomson, was delighted at the response of the students to his calls to stand, “This will now be an issue which the University cannot ignore”. This issue will also be debated during the Big Debate on Friday Week 2 (the 10th of October) at 1pm in the TES.
The Students’ Union is proposing a policy which would ensure that all 1st year students are given the opportunity to live in campus accommodation.
