Women’s Football Cruelly Denied by Birmingham Medics

UWWFC 1 – 2 Birmingham Medics

Birmingham County Women’s Football League

Cryfield Pavillion, University of Warwick

Sunday 14th November 2010

A goal in the final minute sentenced UWWFC to their second defeat of the season as Birmingham Medics ran out narrow 2-1 winners at Warwick University on Sunday.

Warwick were cruelly denied what would have been a deserved point in a dramatic climax to the game, as keeper Laura Maltby saved a dipping cross-come-shot, only for the Medics striker to follow in and despatch the rebound with almost the last kick of the game.

Both teams were hampered by a heavy and sticky pitch however Warwick were the stronger side and deservedly took the lead in the 35th minute through home debutant Claire Maslen’s 30 yard screamer. Striker Lauren Quinn and midfielder Sharon Williams both had chances but were thwarted by the Birmingham keeper.

The second half saw Warwick on the back foot for long periods as Medics adjusted better to the worsening conditions. They levelled thanks to a sublime free kick on the edge of the 18 yard area which floated into the top corner beyond Maltby’s outstretched glove. Player of the match Alizé Perrot prevented at least two further goal scoring opportunities before Medics fortuitous winner which left Warwick feeling hard done by.

UWWFC: Laura Maltby, Hilary Watson, Katie Wales, Alizé Perrot, Kate Lloyd Thomas, Carmen Tan Lisa Infantino (Loren Spencer), Sharon Williams, Claire Maslen, Roisin Morgan, Lauren Quinn.

Woman of the match: Alizé Perrot
