Warwick ranked 6th best University in UK

Warwick has been ranked as the 6th best University in the UK, according to the 2016 Guardian University league tables.

The University has jumped 3 places from last year’s 9th place ranking.

This means that Warwick now sits ahead of traditionally high ranking institutions, such as Imperial College London and the London School of Economics, according to the Guardian’s league table.

The Guardian’s league tables tables take into account factors including student satisfaction, careers after 6 months, staff to student ratio and spending per student.

Meanwhile, 10 departments at the University have been ranked in the top five in their respective subject areas.

This includes Warwick Business School, which was ranked as the best department in the country for its Accounting course.

Warwick’s Economics and Maths departments were both ranked second in their fields.

Classics and Ancient History, Film and Television Studies, Sociology and Theatre Studies were all placed as the fourth best departments in the country.

The league table also revealed that 89% of Warwick students were satisfied with their course and the standard teaching at Warwick.

Peter Dunn, director of Press and Policy at Warwick stated: “There are now now 3 such national UK tables and for the last 15 years we have been ranked anywhere between 3rd and 10th in those tables so we must be doing something right.”

Mr Dunn added: “One has to take each individual league tables with a  pinch of salt as they each apply their own individual weightings and measures to appear more interesting to each paper’s audience.

“Nevertheless we continue to appear in the top ten of every one of those tables and that consistent achievement in itself must mean something.”

Warwick’s league table position has also ensured that the University remains the highest ranked institution in the West Midlands.

However, the 2016 league table saw Warwick’s local rival, Coventry University, placed as the 15th best institution in the UK. This marked a 12 place leap for the University, compared to its ranking at 27th in 2015.

Coventry University has seen significant improvements in its league table positioning over the past five years.

In the Guardian’s 2011 table, the University was placed at 87th in the UK. Yet, the University now ranks above traditional heavyweights such as Manchester and Birmingham, according to the Guardian.

Mr Dunn said: “We are delighted to see that the city of Coventry now has two universities (Warwick and Coventry) in the top 20 of a UK University ranking.”
