RaWing success for radio station

Radio Warwick (RaW) had incredible success at the Student Radio Awards (SRAs) last week, picking up a total of four awards, in every category they were nominated for.

The station won gold in two categories; Abbie McCarthy won Best Newcomer, and Varsity 2012 won Best Outside Broadcast. They also picked up silver for best speech programming on the show ‘How I Lost My Faith’ and bronze for The Tom Davies Show, with Tom Davies.

The awards ceremony, hosted by the Student Radio Association, and with the support of BBC Radio 1 and Global Radio, took place in London, at the Indigo2. The night saw a total of 14 awards presented to student radio journalists from across the country.

BBC breakfast presenter Nick Grimshaw and Capital presenter Dave Berry were amongst those handing out the top awards, joined by BBC Radio 1’s Gemma Cairney and Capital FM’s Pandora were also present at the event.

Over 100 judges inspected the award entries, which aim to celebrate the best in student radio talent from across the UK.

Fourth-year Maths student, Jimmy Murthi, Station Manager of RaW, was thrilled with the results.

“It’s a great honour for our members to be recognised in this way by the Student Radio Awards.” Mr Murthi said. “It was a pleasure to see all the hard work they have put in over the year pay off. Roll on next year!”

Tom Davies, a History and Politics finalist, said: “It wasn’t the most entertaining show in student radio, neither was it the second most entertaining show in student radio. It was in fact, the third most entertaining show in student radio, which is why the judges saw fit to award us the bronze award.”

Second-year English student and head of sport at RaW Isaac Leigh said he is “absolutely amazed and delighted”.

He added: “I wasn’t expecting any award or anything. I just went along for the experience and to win is beyond anything I expected.

“Thanks to all the team because it was a real team effort. Thanks to Tom Davies for helping us set it all up and the technical team for getting the coverage on air smoothly.”

University Radio Nottingham picked up the award for best radio station, won by RaW back in 2003.

Last year, the station did not receive any nominations at the SRAs, despite picking up Warwick SU’s title of Best Society.
