Warwick ranked 4th best university in Europe for 2018 by Times Higher Education

The University of Warwick has been ranked 4th in Europe in the Times Higher Education (THE) Europe Teaching Rankings 2018, under Oxford, Cambridge, and the Sorbonne.

THE announced in June this year that they are “pioneering a new way to measure teaching quality across Europe”, which has been applied to the 2018 Europe Teaching Rankings that placed Warwick at 4th place.

It uses surveys, data from the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA), and data from 242 European institutions to rank the universities. It is the “first international university ranking to be focused entirely on teaching and learning”. Warwick was ranked as the 19th most international university in the world in March this year, also by THE.

Phil Baty, Editorial Director of the THE global rankings, said: “While teaching is perhaps the single most important mission of any university, no other international ranking focuses entirely on teaching and learning, placing student needs at its very heart.”

He added: “This initiative is an important world first, offering a much-needed fresh perspective on excellence in higher education.”

I wish once again to thank everyone who helps make teaching at Warwick an experience that is so treasured and valued

– Professor Stuart Croft

Regarding Warwick’s placement, he said: “The University of Warwick does particularly well in our ‘outcomes’ score, for successful student progress – but also does very well in our student engagement survey, demonstrating that its students feel stretched, challenged and stimulated by their courses.”

Warwick’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Stuart Croft, responded to the University’s new ranking: “It is not just today but every day that I hear stories and testimony of how Warwick staff and students are working together to share in Warwick’s exceptional teaching and learning experience.

“I wish once again to thank everyone who helps make teaching at Warwick an experience that is so treasured and valued. I am delighted that this ranking shows that your work is winning recognition not just in the UK, but across Europe.”
