Leamington Spa set to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games Bowls event

Victoria Park in Leamington Spa is set to host the Lawn Bowls and Para Lawn Bowls for the 2022 Commonwealth Games, after Birmingham successfully won the bid to host the events.

Victoria Park is the home of Bowls England and the English National Bowls Championship, as well as Leamington Spa’s own Bowling Club.

The venue within Leamington will have the capacity to hold 3,300 spectators.

Bowls England Chief Executive, Tony Allcock MBE, has praised the announcement, stating: “Hosting the Commonwealth Games Bowls fixtures at the home of Lawn Bowls in England would be an incredible experience.”

“Having competed in, coached for and managed Commonwealth Games Lawn Bowls I know what it takes to deliver a great championship and I have every confidence that Birmingham 2022 would deliver a fantastic Commonwealth Games.”

Earlier this year, Birmingham beat Liverpool to become the third English city to host the Commonwealth Games, following London in 1934 and Manchester in 2002.

Sian Honnor, previous Bronze and Gold Medallist at the 2010 and 2014 Commonwealth Games respectively, said in an interview with The Tab: “It’s brilliant that Birmingham will be hosting the Commonwealth Games and within that the bowls will be at Leamington Spa.”

“I know that Bowls England will pull out all the stops to ensure the greens are at their best. For those England players competing it will be an amazing experience to take part in a home games.” Miss Honnor is set to represent England in the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia this year.
