Copper Rooms and Arts Centre up for awards

The University has seen two of its features up for the Midlands Zone ‘What’s On Readers Award’.

The Midlands Zone newspaper is the largest regional gay lifestyle magazine in the UK, and hand out the annual award after letting their readers decide from a shortlist of 5 contenders.

Both the Warwick Arts Centre and the Copper Rooms are up for the “Best Regional Theatre/Arts Venue (Medium Capacity: 500-1000)” and “Best Regional Music Venue (Medium Capacity: 500-1000)” awards.

The Arts Centre, attracting roughly 300,000 visitors per year, was opened in 1974, and is one of the largest arts venues in the Midlands.

The Centre has been host to events such as classical music concerts and talks from Nobel Laureates.

On the other hand, the Copper Rooms receives similar spotlight having hosted many musical acts, such as the well-known rock ’n’ roll star Ian Hunter, and gothic rockers The Damned, whose hit single Eloise was in the top 5 for the UK’s music charts.

“These renowned venues… help make a difference and enrich student life.” – Saako Naelini, first-year engineering student.

The SU President informed us of his delight at the Copper Rooms being nominated. “I’m really pleased that the Copper Rooms has been nominated in the ‘Best Regional Music Venue’ category.

“It’s a brilliant weekly night out for students and we also have some fantastic gigs in here on a regular basis. The credit has to go to our amazing venue and entertainments teams, who work so hard day in, day out to innovate and keep up with the changing trends across the industry.”

First-year engineering student, Saako Naelini, spoke about how these venues made the university stand out from the rest. He said, “if you look at other top universities like Bath or UCL, they don’t have these renowned venues which help make a difference and enrich student life.”

Voting closes on the 29th February.
